Teachers’ Law department wins Global Counsel Award
TORONTO – The Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan's (Teachers') legal team was awarded the Global Counsel Award for Best Team in the General Commercial category, at a recent ceremony in New York City.
The awards honour the achievements of in-house counsel who are recognized by their peers as having excelled in their particular fields. The winners in each category are selected from more than 200 nominations, following in-depth analysis of in-house lawyers and legal departments worldwide. Criteria include effective communication, legal understanding, commercial awareness, depth and strength of team and management skills. The awards are organized by the International Law Office and the Association of Corporate Counsel.
"We are honoured that we were selected for this international distinction," said Roger Barton, Vice-President, General Counsel and Secretary. "Our talented legal team makes an important contribution to Teachers' leadership position in the pension management industry. As general counsel, I'm personally delighted that the members of this dedicated group of lawyers and paralegals have been commended for their effective communication, expertise and professionalism."
The Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan is the largest single-profession pension plan in Canada, with $87.4 billion in assets as of December 31, 2008. An independent organization, it invests the pension fund's assets and administers the pensions of 284,000 active and retired teachers in Ontario.
