Appointment notice – Bill Chinery, Steve McGirr and John Murray
Jean Turmel, Chair, Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan Board, is pleased to announce the appointments of Bill Chinery, Steve McGirr and John Murray as members of the Board.
Bill Chinery was CEO of BlackRock Asset Management Canada until early 2013, where he oversaw $130 billion in assets under management. Mr. Chinery is an actuary and global investment expert with more than 30 years of experience in investment management. He began his career as an actuary and developed expertise in pension-plan management before specializing in investment management. Mr. Chinery is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries. He has a BMath from the University of Waterloo.
Steve McGirr was Senior EVP and Chief Risk Officer of CIBC until 2007, where he was responsible for global risk, treasury and balance sheet management. Mr. McGirr holds an MPA and BA (Hons) from Queen's University. He is a director and chair of the Investment Committee of Wellspring, a cancer support network, and a member of the Queen's University Cabinet.
John Murray recently retired as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada. In his more than 35-year career as a global macro-economist, Mr. Murray has represented Canada at the International Monetary Fund, the G7 and G20, and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Queen's University, and an MA and PhD in Economics from Princeton University.
With $140.8 billion in net assets as at December 31, 2013, Teachers' is the largest single-profession pension plan in Canada. An independent organization, it invests the pension fund's assets and administers the pensions of 307,000 active and retired Ontario teachers.
