Our climate strategy

The long-term direction of the energy transition is clear. As the world’s shift to cleaner energy continues, it is creating both risks and significant investment opportunities for long-term investors.

Ontario Teachers' 2026-2030 Climate Strategy is designed to build climate resilience, capture opportunities created by the energy transition, and support real-world impact by leveraging our strengths as an active investor in private markets.

As part of this strategy, we have set a 2030 target of $70 billion in Climate Transition Aligned (CTA) private assets, encompassing investments in companies that are decarbonizing their operations and those enabling the global energy transition.

Supporting decarbonization in the real economy

We work closely with our portfolio companies to support and assess their decarbonization plans. This includes helping them identify opportunities to reduce emissions, improve efficiency and strengthen long-term competitiveness.

Through engagement and stewardship, we aim to encourage credible, practical actions that create long-term value such as, lowering operating costs, meeting evolving customer expectations and improving access to capital.

SSEN Transmission

SSEN Transmission implemented various cost saving energy efficiency measures and installed solar panels in their offices and substations. To support their goal of electrification of operational fleet by 2030, they deployed a network of EV chargers across substations and remote locations. Additionally, in 2023/24, SSEN Transmission achieved a reduction in a potent greenhouse gas1 leakage that is more than 50% above target and is on track to implement new switchgear technology.

Investing in climate solutions and transition progress

As part of our broader 2026-2030 Climate Strategy, we continue to invest in companies and projects that enable emissions reductions, provide climate solutions or help others transition to lower-carbon business models. These investments form part of our Climate Transition Aligned asset base and help us capture attractive opportunities emerging from the shift to a low-carbon economy.
